Think of it this way. If you get any claws you are attacking. The number of claws are how much damage you can inflict. Aplha Monster says when you attack so you would get one VP no mater the damage. Even 0. Poison Spit says when you do damage. So they get a counter if you damage them whether from a claw or a card. They will not get a poison counter if they negate the damage with something like Armor or Camouflage.
