I disagree about the strategy aspect. Although there is always luck in games that involve dice there is a lot of strategy in the game in choosing what to focus your rolls on and which cards to buy (or whether to sweep the cards) and I've never played a game where I thought that I won/lost because of luck. That said I do agree it can get a bit stale. We tend to play it a lot in one night every couple of months then it goes back in the box. It's great for what it is which is a fun, quick, strategy game but it doesn't have the depth of other games available.

I find it more tactical than strategic, and, if you play it a lot, in a short period of time, yes, it probably will get stale, even with the expansions, but there's a short and easy answer to that:

Don't play it a lot in a short period of time!

It's a filler game, and filler games often have this 'problem', that's why it's good to have a range of filler games.

If you think about the quote "The Alpha Zombie will be fully compatible with King of New York, due to be released just a few months after Zombie 15'!" it would make total sense that the timing would then be in line with Gen Con in August. Wouldn't you want a big release news story like this game to be at your booth at the big show? At least that is my best guess is they are pushing to have it ready by August.
Any chance anyone from Iello still reading this that is willing to confirm?

May 15th:
We had a short game night Thursday this week. After dinner we brought out Euphoria. Kate was purple, I white, Tom was black and Angie red. We all rolled our first two workers. Tom got the lowest roll and Angie the highest. She took the 1 in intelligence, followed by my 2 and Tom's 3. Kate had the option to take a 6 in Morale, but took her 4 in intelligence first. Angie wasn't thinking and took 1 in Morale, thinking that was the best move. Tom, Kate and I took 5, 4 and 6 respectively in the Morale tracker. Kate and Angie had Euphorian recruits, Tom had Icaraite, and I a Wastelander.

We began moving the trackers and gaining resources to get workers and build the construction sites. Kate and Angie practically bought stock in electricity with the amount of time they spent on the generators. Angie was able to start the first market with the help of tom and me. They started going up quick with Tom being able to jump on all 6. I missed out on 1 or 2 with Angie, and Kate was out on 2 or 3. They weren't as bad as they normally were, but they did hold us back for gaining resources or victory points.

By this point Tom was down to 3 with Angie and I tied at 4 remaining stars. Kate had 7 still, but her comeback was yet to come. Kate rolled some doubles and picked up the needed resources to put stars in the Euphorian and Wastelander victory point places. Four or five turns after Tom won the game, but it was not by much. One more turn and all four of us had a way to win. Kate, Angie and I tied for second with 1 star remaining.

Love Letter
We had a short game of love letter before heading home. Kate started out gunning us down. She put me out with a guard in the first two rounds, and managed to outplay Angie and Tom for the first two round wins. Angie and I were able to put a stop to her in the next two rounds.

Angie won the third round after eliminating me with the princess. I got lucky in my round by guarding up on Tom. I got a lucky guess eliminating my final opponent that round. Kate took the fifth round and her third point, with a guard and the baron later on.

Tom got on the board after Angie took her second point by outwitting us. His victory was short lived as Kate wrapped up the night with another round win and the overall victory.

May 17th:
Tom had Angie and I over to hang out with him and his cousin from Florida. They haven't seen each other in many years, and he thought he'd try him on some board games that were good intro games for a non-gamer. I feel that looking back on the night, Ryan gets an A+ on how well he picked the games up and playing them.

Love Letter
Ryan got some beginner's luck and won the first two rounds. One by beating me for the final card and the other by eliminating us. Angie started playing well, but the luck was not in her favor, except the one round where she set me up with the princess. Tom started a "Kate run," and started picking up wins.

I pulled off two rounds where I beat out Tom and Ryan by sheer luck. I set Tom up with a King trading him a card, and then using it on him my next turn. I used my baron against Ryan while holding the princess or countess, winning my second point. Ryan got Angie and me in the next round before Tom used his witty tactics to wipe us the last three rounds.

King of Tokyo:
We brought out KoT and Tom introduced it being similar to Yahtzee. Ryan picked up quickly and took over Tokyo. He enjoyed keeping Tokyo and beating all of us down. Tom was fine with that and healed his wounds, collecting victory points along the way. No one was aware that Tom was nearing victory. He got a roll with five 3's, and entered Tokyo for a 6 VP round.

Angie and I were eliminated by death, leaving Ryan to fend off Tom's onslaught. He beat Ryan with victory points, leaving Ryan in Tokyo with Giga Saur.

The second game had a different kind of verse. Tom went on the offensive, as I went for VP's. Angie and Ryan took shots at me while I was in Tokyo, forcing me to leave it twice to heal. Ryan gained momentum and started softening us up.

Tom collected energy and got the monster card for a second life, if he sacrificed all his cards and VPs. It came in handy as he kept nearing death. He stole Tokyo from me and dished out a 4 damage round to the four of us, eliminating me with 16 of the 20 VPs. Angie and Ryan were able to heal and survive.

Tom kept Tokyo because he feared nothing with a second life. Angie helped Ryan to lower Tom's health before she finished him off. Tom's second life left him a bit bitter. He went out for blood and eliminated one of his foes. The other was wounded and unable to recover, thus giving a win by elimination.

Guillotine:
We brought out one of our party favorites, Guillotine. This one is fast paced and easy to learn.

The first game went by without much backstabbing, as Ryan learned how to play and we were somewhat nice. I took some low point cards 1-3's, and two guards in the first two rounds. I made decent points, but stayed under the radar. Tom and Angie fought each other for the high value cards, costing both of them a chance for a win. Ryan snuck in behind me to pick up some valuable points and not making friends at the same time as he used Mass Confusion. The game ended in the third round with us all hoping for enough to capture victory. I squeaked by with 25 and Tom failed to make any points on this game.

We made a mistake by letting Ryan start this game. He took the first card for 2 points, and ended the day with Scarlet Pimpernel. We saw how low scoring this would be after four turns in the next round and he took Robespierre with great joy, ending that day as well. The final round went long and much backstabbing was used. We fought, kicked and screamed for the high value cards, while avoiding the tragic figure and the martyrs. Angie was forced to take the clown after Tom gave it to her. We all gathered at most 7 cards, but King Louis and Marie Antoinette weren't among them. Angie kept enough points to tie with me for a win.

Carcassonne
We finished the night of with Carcassonne. The river went down quickly, and we started building our little kingdoms. I got the first monastery and began building a city and road around it. Angie and Tom took castles and started claiming farm. Ryan just started building different things as he learned how to play. At this point we were all getting tired.

The game progressed as it normally did. Tom dipped in on a castle, this time it was mine. Angie wanted in on it too, but I couldn't afford to give her points to beat me also. Ryan and I completed our cloisters, and progressed to other things. He had a good sized castle, that ended up being unfinished for 14 points, that he focused on. I tried to claim some roads and access to farmland, which I got only one of for 9 points. Angie and Tom claimed 3 a piece.

As the game neared we tried to finish our roads, castles, and cloisters. No one was able to get all of their guys on the board, and the points turned out relatively low. Tom added his up first, and took the early lead. We added Ryan's next and he stayed last place. I was the third added up and moved back into second place after leading most of the game. Angie came last and past me by a small margin for second.

I need clarification on a couple of cards that have given me some issues during gameplay...

Rapid Healing:
On my turn, I rolled and dealt damage to another player in Tokyo. After my 3rd and final roll, I had banked enough attack to kill him entirely. He originally had 1 heart, but I dealt 3 damage. Then, he shocked the table and spent 8 energy, healing himself to 2 health (-2 + 4 is +2) using the Rapid Healing. I told him that he was dead so he couldn't use it, but he insisted the card's literal interpretation allowed him to do this. Who was right?

Smoke Cloud:
The word "reroll" seems vague to me. Since each turn consists of up to 3 rolls, does a "reroll" refer only to the last roll of a turn? Or does it mean a free reroll of all 6 die (essentially a bonus roll)? Or does it mean a full rerolling (essentially a full extra turn)?

A real answer on these would make this game more enjoyable for me. Any help or input would be awesome!

Thank you

So for Rapid Healing, it depends on your play group. Some people would argue that he waited too long to use his Rapid Healing and was dead before he could use it.
However, my group reads the card as it says... use ANYTIME. So this monster see 3 damage incoming and heals up before that damage can actually kill him. We find this use of the card to be far more entertaining than simply saying, "no you're dead, you can't use that card".
Discuss it with your play group and come up with a playstyle you can all agree on.

As for Smoke Cloud, it is an extra roll of all 6 dice. A normal turn is 1 roll and 2 re-rolls for a total of 3 rolls. Smoke cloud gives you the option of adding an extra re-roll for a total of 4, 5 or 6 rolls depending on how many counters you use.

As soon as you resolve the claws he is dead as the dice are resolved instantaneously and cannot heal once dead. He should have healed earlier. He pressed his luck in hopes you would not deal enough damage and lost. In the future he will consider the problem more.

You get an initial roll followed by two rerolls. Smoke cloud lets you have more rerolls. There are other cards that can give you another turn which would include the initial roll and two rerolls.

I will state simply and definitively that purchasing a card does not in any way imply turn end. That phase only ends when the player determines it does, though other players are welcome to assume that they will be receiving the dice soon based on the number of cubes the first player has, barring any Evolution or other Energy-gaining effect, It is not the other players' to make such assumptions.

Also, buying the card does not definitely end the game with 20VP. That happens when the card is resolved and the counter moves to 20VP. The player must actually take the time to resolve the card and gain those VP rather than pointing at a lower number and declaring a win based on a future addition incoming. Again, all players may make assumptions, but until the actual game state changes, it is all virtual and subject to effects. This is exactly like not taking damage because another player rolled a Claw until the dice are actually resolved, where other effects could come into play before that resolution. And even then, when taking damage, you are not at 0:heart: and eliminated until you actually have 0:heart:, as much as your opponent would like one to simply assume a number on your counter rather than watch it tick down.

Simply put, there are several assumed houserules of arrogance here, where players are playing other player's position for them, without allowing the built-in ruleset to balance the situation.

It definitely crossed our minds, but we'd rather not rush the game development just to have it released earlier, and we still need at least a few weeks to polish the art and set everything up for production. I think we're most probably looking at a September or Essen release, but nothing is for sure yet. We'll let you all know as soon as we have a better idea. ;)

Thanks for the publisher update! I'd rather wait until after too as I wouldn't be able to make GenCon anyway. That means I'm less bummed about that knowing I won't miss out on that.

We play Rapid Healing as "Anytime" meaning, literally, anytime. So he would be able to heal before death.

The attacker would have needed to roll more claws than Energy potentially usable for Healing.

For Smoke Cloud, if you use one counter, you effectively have a 4th roll avaialble, in which you can re-roll up to all your dice, or just one die.

Would like to know if anyone has run into this combo, and what you did.

What happens if I use Parasitic Tentacles to purchase Monster Batteries from another player, that just happens to be loaded with Energy on it?

As a follow-up, if the above is you get the Energy, can Parasitic Tentacles player add MORE energy to the Monster Battery card?

Thanks in advance!

We play rapid healing before or after the Player resolves the dice not during. Player must survive the attack. We do our best not to interupt a players game step.

We play rapid healing (and evolutions of a similar type) as a response.

Then again we are mostly magic players so it makes sense to us. I can see the logic of not allowing it but i like the loser interpretation of "anytime" :)

I would allow rapid healing to be used after receiving enough damage to be killed by.
