If you had read the thread, you'd realize that the designers have provided the official answer in the FAQ, rendering further answers from players superfluous. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :D

Oh well, sometimes I just like hearing myself talk, so no big loss! :)

Besides, I like my interpretation better. :p

By Yield, we mean that you give up Tokyo to the monster attacking you and he MUST take your place.

Hey there! I gave this a try, and in general it was pretty good! You're right, monster batteries is fine as it is. The main issue remaining with the double energy comes from cards with the ability to spend energy for immediate effects (wings, rapid healing, stretchy, telepath, and whichever others), since they now cost so little that they are at least twice as good, often better than that. Either the initial card cost or the activation cost should double (probably the latter) - I quickly grabbed up wings and was easily able to keep enough energy to avoid any significant attacks. Other than that, this is a solid variant with very little to change or keep track of!

Sam, I'll watch those cards for problems in my games. If they prove to be a problem like you say, I'll probably go with your latter fix too. It seems like the easiest adjustment to make. Something like this:

+1 ENERGY must be spent on any card that allows a player to spend energy for an effect.

Thanks for the feedback!

I've played 3 games now and in every single one, cards have been the deciding factor.

Obviously I need to play it a lot more, but right now the best strat seems to be building up a large surplus of energy at the start, cherry picking some cards (especially defensive ones that boost health or reduce damage) and then take Tokyo and hold it until you win.

That's one strategy, but certainly not the only way to win.

You should not on any level need to spend 8 energy just to gain one. I find it to be one of the worse cards in any game I have played. I house ruled it to 1 energy for 2 gained. There are like at least 3-4 cards with the promos added in that equal Energize in their first usage. Granted, I find a number of the Discard cards underwhelming compared to the Keep cards. I think I figured it out you could buy three Keep cards for the cost of Energize that all were equal to Energize once they activated.
The card rewards players who stockpile energy. Reducing it's cost to 1 means the first person to turn over the card will take it, which is silly. Why even require cards to cost energy then?

I think it's a neat card, especially for the compulsive energy hoarder.

No, I don't think there are any that equal it in their first usage. It takes 4 activations of, say, Friend of Children before you've actually gained an energy (though obviously Friend is a great card). "Only Making it Stronger" quite often never pays for itself. Batteries can gain you a fair bit of energy, but it's almost always a mistake to buy. Most of these cards cost you tempo - they take time to pay off, if they ever do.

In contrast to those cards, Energize pays off immediately, and it combo's well with News Crew, Friend, Alien Metabolism, and Hoarder (although Hoarder is a horrible card). Energize has quite often made a difference in our games - if you can afford it, it's always a good purchase, and is one of the few cards that rewards a high energy balance.

I think the game could use a second copy of Energize, actually.

I have nothing but good thing to say about KOT. I have teached the game to more than 10 people, most of them non gamers, and they all loved it. It'S also a favorite among my regular game group.

- The game feels scripted and "samey". It plays itself
- The mechanisms are too complex and difficult
- The game takes way too long to complete
- Not thematic enough
- Plasma missiles are overpowered (obligatory Eclipse reference)
- The box insert is beyond non-functional
- The rules are too dry and long
- Not enough player interaction. Multiplayer solitaire
- Not enough meaningful decisions

What were they thinking?

... just kidding! I love this game and so does everyone I've taught it too. It's got a permanent place in my collection along with King of Tokyo: Power Up! when it comes out. :D

Thread: King of Tokyo:: General:: Cards stuck together and now damaged/marked...gameplay ruined?

So I just received a brand new copy, and when I was taking the cards out of the shrink, there were a handful of them stuck together. Upon getting them unstuck, the backs of a couple, and the front of a couple, were left completely marked. Will this hinder the game at all? After a couple games through, we will be able to memorize what the marked cards are.

I have sent an e-mail to Iello Games, hoping they will replace the damaged cards; but if they don't, is this a huge problem?

Thanks

Ryan

If you can read the card faces and have access to card sleeves with opaque backs, I would say no.

But that still sucks. I had an issue with the cards in my copy but luckily they got replaced fairly quickly.

Did Iello replace them?

Thanks for the opaque card sleeve idea. I may do that if I can't get the replacement cards.

I had issues as well, but just tiny spots around on them, not bad at all
still readable
you just need to make sure you can read them
