When I talk about KoT,I am specifically referring to the entire game with Power Up. So the new monsters are not cosmetic only as they have unique powers.

Sure. Ok. But they are not *necessary* for game play. The game works just fine without the new monsters with new unique powers. You aren't, like, playing the game at a deficit due to not having Space Penguin and matching new Power Up cards. You aren't going to be losing games to your opponent who showed up with Space Penguin to battle you or anything. As King of Tokyo doesn't work like that. You sit down and play the game with what you have, and it works just fine, new content or no.

Yes. I know that people *like* to have the new stuff. But they don't *need* the new stuff. Even in so much as you need anything in regards to a game like this.

I got into King of Tokyo on 2nd Edition. I don't have Kraken or Cyber Bunny. I just picked up the new Power Up. I have cards for Power Up Kraken and Cyber Bunny. I do not now feel the need (or feel slighted) that I don't have Kraken or Cyber Bunny. If I wanna use their Power Up cards, I can in a variant version. Or I can just ignore them (which is likely what I'm doing). It doesn't matter to me. As the game plays just fine *without* Kraken or Cyber Bunny. I don't feel that the game is somehow lacking due to not having those monsters. Even though they have unique powers represented by Power Up cards. That I have. And the best way to use them is to go out and spend money on the 1st Edition of the game to get those two extra characters I don't have. I could do that. But I'm not going to, as it seems silly to do that. And as I'm a grown up, I'm capable of deciding that "spending a bunch of money for minimal gain" is a less effective plan than "not spending a bunch of money for minimal gain when the game works just fine without that minimal gain, and I in no way feel that the game lacks anything without that stuff".

So to aquire this content ALL 1st edition owners who would like it can buy Power Up again despite owning nearly all of the content and just mix powers with whatever monsters they want or if they would like rebuy the base game as well to have the correct monsters.

Sure. They *could* do that. Or, conversely, they could *not* do that, and everything works just fine still.

A simple upgrade pack would make this process significantly simpler and cheaper for 1st edition owners, but they have chosen not to go this route. This also seems to be a good strategy for them because there seem to be plenty of people going out and spending the $60ish to rebuy everything and then praise Iello for allowing them to do so.

Sure. They could have done that. Possibly. But it is probably vastly less efficient than to do what they are doing. As 1st Edition works just fine without those extra characters. And no one is *forced* to buy the new edition to get those new characters. They just *want* to. And if they want to do that, they can. It seems *really* silly to be complaining that something that is a completely unnecessary purchase (even in the context of hobby gaming--the extra characters from 2nd Edition? *Completely* unnecessary. The game works fine without them. No one is suffering a lack of competitiveness due to not having the extra characters. They are purely something that people want 'cause they like stuff, and for no other reason) is something that needs to be "called out".

I, on the otherhand, am calling them out on this nonsense because I am not going to rebuy all the content, and I think it is problematic overall to not just ignore but praise these kinds of practices.

Well, ok then. You have successfully solved the problem.

If they released a new edition of Eclipse that was identical except two alien factions were replaced with 2 new ones would you be happy about it?

I would weigh the pros and cons of "buying the new game just to get those two things" vs "not buying the new game just to get those two things", and do what I thought was appropriate. Especially if the new version was full of other functional changes that probably make the game work better overall. Playing the game without the two new races would not, however, negatively impact the working of the game either.

I'll point out, however, that the new edition of King of Tokyo has numerous functional changes over the first edition. A lot of people probably were perfectly happy to buy the new edition of the game, on the grounds that the new version works differently than that old version.

I know many disagree, but as someone who has supported the game for so long, I don't find the options of do without the content or pay $60 for content you own 90% of already to be particularly customer friendly.

I 100% agree that it would have been nice for them to have offered the two new characters as an optional, individual purchase. But then, I also don't run a game company, and don't know the inns and outs of supply chains and item distribution. And given that not having the new characters in no way compromises the ability to play the game, it comes down to what you value. Do you value having all the stuff and the new updated rules and cards more than you value $60? If so, yaa! If not, yaa!
