The place where King of Tokyo takes a slight misstep is later in the game. Around three-quarters of the way through the game, the winner can be predicted with almost 100% accuracy. So, the last quarter drags a little as players are either eliminated, or waiting for the inevitable to become reality.
King of Tokyo does feel futile near the end for the losing players and this does make it not fun for a while, which is why I cannot give it a diamond rating.

Hmmm... I've played this game many times now, and you're right... about three-quarters of the way through the game (20 minutes?), it becomes obvious who is way ahead...
I suspect you may play with a very pacifist group of players however, because every single game (and I'm not lying here) where it became quite obvious who was about to win 3/4ers of the way through, that very person did not live to see the end of the game, as everyone else in my group suddenly got very violent towards that person and started concentrating on claws to the face of said person. I keep having surprise endings in my experience, because the person who gets out to a big lead, always ends up dead.
