First of all, Munchkin Smash Up is a great set, don't let any Munchkin related prejudice stop you from buying it ;-)
The things that were sufficent for me to get interested (and finally buying it and all expansions so far):
1. Richard Garfield game
2. Giant Monsters fighting theme
3. High player count (it's sooo hard to find something new for a 6+ player casual group every time they meet that's not a Werewolf or Party game).

Oh I refrained from purchasing the munchkin expansion because i did not enjoy it.
Yea Richard Garfield id have some impact on why i bought it, but not enough to merit the reason why i did. I have been playing magic for about 16-17 years. Great fun. But just because I am a loyal MTG player doe snot mean that everything Richard throws out there will be gold. So I don't depend on who made the game (Though if the creator is known for bad game design there is a chance I won't risk it)
Yea, having a family of 5, you need to make sure you have game that supports 5+. KoT does.
