Are there substitive game rules/strategy changes meriting repurchase of 2nd edition? I don't care so much about whether a given monster is in the game or not, but as someone who enjoys his copy of base game plus expansions, I'm trying to figure out if this is more of a refresh or more of a redesign....

The only other problem might be that any future additions or promos for the game will likely be using the new card backs (and pertain to the new monsters like the new Evolution pack). If you don't mind having a handful of cards with different backs, or that your Evolution cards will have different monster names on a few of them, then there is no reason to get the new version.
I picked it up myself anyway, just to have the handful of new monsters for the game. It's always nice to have a bit more of variety in the game, even if it is only cosmetic. Kids love more choices and there is less fighting when there are multiples of similar creatures (Cyber Bunny and Cyber Kitty for example).
