King of Tokyo is an excellent game for any age, but I find it particularly enjoyable with my eight year old boy, Malachi, and six year old girl, Ruby. They frequently ask to play KOT. Today, they saw me working on incorporating the King of Tokyo: Halloween expansion into our base game set and they begged me to try it out with them.
Malachi selected Pumpkin Jack and Ruby took Boogey Woogey. I selected my standby, The King, and we got ready to beat on each other.
I let Ruby go first, and she started the game off with triple threes and an extra three on the last roll for 4 points. Not bad!
I went next and earned a few energy cubes and took Tokyo.
Malachi rolled four energy cubes but didn't like any of the options on the board, so he saved them. He also dealt me one damage.
Ruby was next. Man, the girl can roll claws! Four damage to me and I am thinking about leaving Tokyo. I decide to stay in for the two points at the beginning of my turn.
On my next turn, I roll some energy cubes and pick up Spiked Tail for +1 damage each time I deal damage. I prefer to fight my way through my children then to coast on victory points.
Malachi damages me again and I leave Tokyo to recover. He decides to buy something and I help him understand Rapid Healing. He picks it up to help stay in Tokyo.
Ruby rolls some energy cubes and heals a few damage points. My children tend to think this game is more about staying at 10 health and collecting shiny cubes than it is about taking risks, dealing damage, and earning points. They tend to try to get out of Tokyo as soon as possible if they enter.
Malachi takes some damage from me and decides to leave Tokyo. I enter and pick up a Friend of Children (I love this card for earning extra energy cubes).
Another round, some healing takes place and I pick up Herbivore for +1 damage from Tokyo.
Next round, I roll three damage. This, plus the two from Spiked Tail and Herbivore takes Malachi out of the game (poor guy asks if he can play again right away). Malachi goes off to color and Ruby and I are left to stare each other down (six year olds can be intimidating, plus she can move her eyes independently from each other to creep me out).
We trade blows back and forth. She heals, but not fast enough. I grab complete destruction and start trying for 9 vp. I also picked up Armor Plating and Ruby grabbed Telepath for re-roll powers.
It turned out to be only a matter of time though, with my +2 damage each time I dealt damage. Boogey Woogey eventually succumbed to her wounds and Ruby was out of the game. We all gave high fives and they promised to get me next time.
Note: we did not play with the costume part of the expansion. I may try to incorporate this next time (haven't tried yet), but we needed a shorter game as bed time was getting near.
