As others have pointed out, the game is full of contradictions (that is why there is a FAQ, and a currently in progress FAQ just for the Halloween expansion). You claim 'KOT is not a reactionary take that game. It is a press your luck game' but that is not true. It is clearly a combination of both, that is why some cards must be played as a response to other things happening in the game (i.e. Evolutions that give you extra VPs after you do damage).
Thinking that playing a card after somebody has got 20 VPs is an asshole moves basically just shows you to be the very thing you are claiming of other people. Games are meant to be fun, if people are happy for the game to be played that way (which in my opinion is the most fun way, and stops being assholes), then that's how it should be played.
