The game is not very long. I don't think I've every seen someone that was eliminated wait for a long enough period of time to become bored. I'd worry that this would skew the game towards a VP strategy over an attacking strategy. However, it's not like KoT is some super deep game, so you can play it in whatever fashion that provides you the most enjoyment.

Have you tried playing with the expansion? The fact that every time you roll 3 hearts you get an extra ability really helps with the putting "people back into the game" goal you're looking for. We've played quite a few games where I've had people dead to rights only to have them roll 3 hearts, recovering health and providing them with some sweet ability that helps carry them to victory.
