I picked up Urbion last week so I could get some good solo gaming in to up my totals. I really like this game since it is very challenging. I lost my first 9 games before winning my last 2. I think I am ready for the expansions. Watch this space for the results.
I was lucky enough to attend an impromptu meetup on Saturday as well as my regular Tuesday night meetup so I will combine the games played here.
On to the games....
Saturday started with Tammany Hall. I had heard about this game but didn't really know much about it. We played a 5-player game and only one person had played once before so after a rules explanation, we were into the game. I really like this game. Everything just seemed to flow and there are some agonizing decisions to be made. The key to the game is the roles and bluffing your opponents. The theme did no feel pasted on to me since everything made logical sense. I have seen comments around a runaway leader problem, but I don't see it since everyone generally goes after the leader. You have to be shrewd, take some risks, and build and break alliances to win this game. I managed to win by about 5 points which may bias my opinion just a tiny bit.:)
A quick game of Sultan was next. Love this filler game.
A few people stepped out for a food run so we played two fast games of Toc Toc Woodman. If you want a game you can play in 2 minutes with any number of players up to 7 and have a good laugh, get this game.
We wrapped up Saturday with Bombay. I have seen this game but it looked a bit too simple to catch my interest. It is a very simple pick-up and delivery game but the bits are great and it is fun; which is all you can really ask for in a game.
The regular Tuesday meetup started with Bacchus' Banquet. This was a pretty lively game with my character getting knocked out mid-game so I had to draw a new one. It was very close as everyone used their privilege cards and their belts were nearly bursting at the seams. One of the characters that wants presents won just before Caligula would have won the game.
Everyone loves Sultan so we played a fast game while a few people went on a dinner run.
Three new people showed up so I volunteered to teach them something lighter since only one of them was familiar with these types of games. Finca is a good choice here. Easy to teach, play, and is very gentle on the eyes. They picked the game up very quickly and the game was very competitive with the one experienced new player coming out on top by 2 points.
Next was a 5-player game of King of Tokyo. All of the new players joined in along with one other regular member and myself. This was a great game as it came down to two of the new players for the win. The winner had 1 health left as the last opponent perished. Very exciting with much laughter and cheering!
I wanted to give the new people a taste of a variety of games but also wanted to keep it fast and light. Toc Toc Woodman fit the bill nicely.
The new people felt comfortable enough to switch over to other tables but I didn't have much time so I wanted to play something fast that could be taught quickly. Africana is a nice pick-up and deliver, "Valdora-light" type game. Setup takes a few minutes but the rules are light and the game plays in about an hour. Since this is my game I was crushed and finished a distant third.
A great two meetups with new friends and new games.
