I actually do enjoy King Of Tokyo with just two players. I find you have more chance to use tactics and analysis, especially regarding the use of cards. Because you will be in and out of Tokyo, swapping with your opponent, there is a great element of push your luck. Do you stay in Tokyo for the victory points even though you are only on 3 health? What if your opponent rolls three claws? What if they roll enough energy cubes to buy the card that deals four damage to every monster AND they have 6 health, because they are outside Tokyo and have had opportunity to heal.So yes, I do enjoy it with two players. I find there to be a lot of back and forth, like a tug-of-war. And you get to see how willing your opponent is to take damage for the lure of victory points.
When I have played three players, I found players didn't pay attention to what was going on when it wasn't their turn. Now, turns are so short that there is relatively zero downtime, so maybe that was just my playgroup. Also, the player elimination really hurt one of my fellow players as he was eliminated first in 4 out of 4 games that we played. Really soured his experience of the game.
It's a worthwhile pickup for two players, depending on how you like to play and assuming there will be times when you get to play it with more than two.
