I do not think I had made any major mistakes. I realize that often new players think this, but I talked with the other players and they agreed that my rerolls and moves were all reasonable.
Yup, not leaving Tokyo was probably the major (rookie) mistake.

I take my games seriously too, but I love King Of Tokyo.
There are clearly strategies and tactics to be found in the game.
It may be random, but you have control over the randomness, so risk management can be used.
Just because it's a light filler doesn't mean that it can't be played or taken seriously.
