Last week was a week of three revelations. Three games that were unplayed or "unplayed properly" until now and which were long on my radar, then on my shelf.
Firstly, it was King of Tokyo. Always wanted to have, but it was almost 40€ in FLGS, then bought from Essen last year and stood in shrink till last week. Had noone on the horizon to try it. Then, suddenly, friends asked for "a lighter game" and it was time.
Group that overcalculates the Power Grid until steam from their ears was laughing, fiercely throwing dice almost offtable and literally fighting each other. This game is an IMMENSE fun. I never suspected that it would play so good. And I am sorry for marks from dice on pretty wooden table. These were a HARD games with loses on 19VP from 5-claw throws, two turns in a line with 18VP and no chance to score... We laughed us almost dead. Can't recommend this game more.
Another was a basic Galaxy Trucker - we played total three rounds with 4-ppl. For the first time it was 4 persons who wanted to play all the rounds. And it was laughing again. At the end of a journey, it were some (forbidden) ships with 0 crew, 0 engines and only goods in lonely crates... The key to the game is adding harder cards instead of easier. And doubling the cards on flight 3. Then it's intense, even for good planners. This game was gathering dust for 2 years... It won't anymore. I have found a group for that.
And the last but definitely not least, was A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition). We played with 4 and it was my first play. I never felt myself so vulnerable and unsure even in munchkin when being first to level 9. Even in Cosmic Encounter with last planet on hand. Even in Eclipse when being raped by 6 dreadnoughts on last turn. In Game of Thrones you are not trusting anyone. You do not believe anyone. You don't believe even ones on the opposite side of the map. Treachery and lies all around. Lost badly both times. But would love to try that again. Maybe I could control that eventually...
It was a great week.
