I love when people say "if you don't like randomness, you won't like this game." It's reverse-game-snobbery. Oh, you can only play "serious" games, and you just don't like King of Tokyo because you just don't know how to have fun. Well, actually, I enjoy a bit of randomness; it can provide a dynamic game environment. I think it would be better to say, "if you don't like unbalanced cards and no ways to mitigate luck (other than getting more lucky) you may hate this game."
I just think if you're looking for a game with balance and ways to mitigate luck you're looking for something slightly more serious and slightly more competative than KoT is claiming to offer. I play a game like KoT for silly nonsensical random crap to happen. Bunny robots to gain WAY over powered "powers" and for me to lose my stuggle by one REALLY crappy die roll. If I want something that's balanced and I can "out play" my opponents with skill and thinking I'd choose another game.
Games have categories and styles. Not all light games are the same. Some are nonsencial silliness. Some are strategy thinkers. Still maintaining the "light" subcategory. If I want mindless shooting games I go play those if I want in depth RPG's I play those. It's no snobbery intended in saying "If you don't like luck don't look here".
In the end no ones claiming this game has some great depth strategy and decisions. But we're also saying that when played as a "social game" it's defifnitly more than just Yahtzee.
We're also not saying everyone has to like this. However people SHOULD be aware of what type of game they are playing. It's hard to hate a dog for not being a cat or hate a bike for not being a car. This is a fun social party type game that never claims to be "Go". Judging it unfairly based on what you thought or wanted it to be is unfair on the people who made the game and those who do enjoy it.
Not all games are going to cater to EVERY subgroup of gaming needs. This game has a LARGE silly luck nonsense factor. That's what the game is based around. It's a game where large silly monsters are fighting over tokyo. No where was it ever said it was going to be "well balanced" or there were ways to "mitigate luck" and out play your oponents.
I'm not saying you even have to like this. If you don't like this about the game then that's your perogotive, people like differet things and that's fine. But bashing on the game or the people who like it for what it is and never claimed to be anything BUT is a little silly. and to claim people are being "reverse snobs" for telling you not to eat apples if you know you don't like apples is also a little over board.
