Thanks for the dissenting review, hope it'll help someone! ;)Count another fella in the group of dislikers of this game. The first time we tried it in a pub with 6 players, two guys said "this is amazing! The best thing ever! We're going to buy it right away!". Most people in our group usually dislike the "tastes" of this couple of guys (they're brothers btw), but in this case I was the only one who didn't enjoy it. Some cards felt close to useless, while others seemed close to broken. Then again there was no easy way to deny any card to anyone or to sort of "browse" through the giant deck. Yes, dice are crazy and you can curse luck and whatnot, but I was fine with that in this sort of game until one guy became untouchable with wings and suddenly the game got immensely long as he was able to hold onto Tokyo while we were trying desperately to run for more points with the handicap of not being inside Tokyo.
The other games weren't much different, there was always one card that got in the way of enjoyment making the game longer and more painful for those who couldn't get it (another one that comes to mind might be the healing beam or something). The two guys got the game, and after each play a new "disliker" emerged becoming annoyed by the game. Most of us now can only barely tolerate it, while I find it a perfect waste of time. But hey, the two brothers still love it like the first time (other games they love that I personally hate: Munchkin, Elder Sign, Deadwood and Bang!, I sold a couple of them to these guys myself).
BGG has spoken, yes, and it's a fact that most people here (and maybe most people in general) like it, but I've got used to be in the minority with many exceptionally received titles. I think the biggest appeal of the game is in the big dice and catchy theme/looks.
