Thread: King of Tokyo:: General:: Replacement parts?

Anyone know if I can buy replacement parts or so I just contact the company and ask for replacements? Fresh out of the box my Meka dragon tail was horribly bent/creased and some strange adhesive was stuck on my Kraken and bunny. It bugs me enough to want to do something about it. Any thoughts/ similar experience(s)?

I had a minor issue with one of my scoring cards. I contacted the retailer who obtained and sent me a replacement (well, two, in fact!)

I've also heard that contacting iello directly is usually fruitful.

I've had problems with the last two KoT games I purchased. The expansion I purchased was missing chits, and the KoT base game I purchased as a gift for my nephew had faulty scoring-boards, as well as damaged play pieces (which sounds like what you have).

I contacted Stephan of Iello at iellogames@gmail.com, and he responded within a day, and had shipped replacement parts within a few days.

I wasn't happy to get two faulty products in a row, but Iello has been really good about fixing up the problems.

My friends and I played three games tonight (just got back from his place actually at 4:30 AM), and each session lasted about 30-40 minutes using the Power Up! Expansion, too. When I had originally gotten to introduce the game to them, the games lasted no longer than 20-25 minutes due to the fact that everyone was mainly out to attack each other.

I find that with a smaller group, the games tend to fly by faster. With a bigger group, games tend to last longer, but the strategies are definitely different.

Thread: King of Tokyo:: General:: Damage Dealt When Players Are in Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay Questions

If there are players in Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay at the same time and someone outside of Tokyo deals damage, do they choose which player to deal the damage to within Tokyo or do they deal damage to both players in Tokyo?

If someone outside Tokyo deals damage to both players, which I doubt is the way the game is supposed to be played, can both players in Tokyo flee at the same time? Ignore this question if you choose which player in Tokyo to deal damage.

Furthermore, if there are players in Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay and one of the players within Tokyo deals damage, do they deal damage to everyone outside of Tokyo AND the other player in Tokyo with them?

If the player in Tokyo deals damage to everyone outside of Tokyo AND the other player inside Tokyo then can the other player in Tokyo flee even though nobody will take his place? Again, ignore this question if you don't deal damage to the person in Tokyo while you're in Tokyo also.

Lastly, if someone is in Tokyo City, but nobody is in Tokyo Bay yet and a person outside Tokyo rolls claws to deal damage, do they deal damage to the person in Tokyo City or do they just take over Tokyo Bay and deal no damage in the same way that someone has to take over Tokyo City in the beginning of the game without dealing damage to anyone?

I'm under the impression that you choose who to deal damage to if you're outside of Tokyo, dealing damage inside Tokyo. I'm also under the impression that you only hurt the players outside of Tokyo and not the other player in Tokyo with you. I also believe you don't deal any damage when entering Tokyo Bay while it is still vacant. I just want to clarify and make sure my understanding of the rules is correct.

The only problem I can see is if the player in Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay team up, they could deal a ton of damage in no time. This brings me to another question. If both Tokyo locations are occupied and the number of players dips below 5, is the player in Tokyo Bay automatically forced out?

Thanks a ton for helping me out! I appreciate any answers.

Both players in Tokyo are damaged.

Both players can flee.

Furthermore, if there are players in Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay and one of the players within Tokyo deals damage, do they deal damage to everyone outside of Tokyo AND the other player in Tokyo with them?
Only players outside of Tokyo are damaged. The players inside should play temporarily as a team.

They both deal damage to Tokyo City and go to Tokyo Bay unless the player in Tokyo City flees in which case they deal damage and go to Tokyo City.

The only problem I can see is if the player in Tokyo City and Tokyo Bay team up, they could deal a ton of damage in no time. This brings me to another question. If both Tokyo locations are occupied and the number of players dips below 5, is the player in Tokyo Bay automatically forced out?
They can deal a ton of damage especially when sitting next to each other at the table. You are correct if the players dip below 5 then Toky Bay is emptied. That is why it is better to hold on to Tokyo City.

Session: King of Tokyo:: King of Tokyo - 2 Games - First time with Power Up! expansion

Hello all! This is my first session report on BGG so any constructive feedback is welcome!

My family gathers to play a game every Sunday after family dinner. Tonight's game was King of Tokyo. It's easily game that they request the most. The first few games we ever played, my little brother (12) won. He's since decided to retire and go out on top, but every game since has been won by my little sister (13). Leading up to the game, she had been talking a ton of trash and was borderline cocky. After dinner, I wrangled up everyone that wanted to play. I was only able to gather myself, wife, mother, and sister but on the bright side wouldn't have to explain the Tokyo Bay yielding rules a dozen times like I always seemingly have to do. I explained how the evolution cards worked for the Power Up! expansion and we were off!

Game 1:
Myself - The King
Wife - Pandakai
Mom - Gigazaur
Sister - Cyber Bunny

The game started off as most do for us. Everyone tries to do everything they can not to go into Tokyo and just build up energy and grab special powers before the action starts going down. My sister started by rolling five 3's on her first turn to jump out to an early points lead. Feeling behind the 8 ball early, I jumped into Tokyo to try and do some damage so she couldn't fly under the radar and win on points as she usually does. Spiked tail was sitting with my name on it, however my wife knowing I usually play aggressively, grabbed it before I could. On the flip came Parasitic Tentacles which I bought with the intent of stealing the tail, but on the subsequent flip came Stretchy which allows you to spend two energy to change one of your dice to any result. Given that it takes three hearts to get an evolution card, buying it was a no brainer.

The game continued on with mom trying and failing to roll hearts so she could experiment with evolution cards. My wife dabbled between going for points and attacking. I was still focused on doing as much damage as possible, but the dice just weren't feeling it. My sister was approaching a points victory and had to egg on my mom and wife to attack her. We were only able to get her down to three health needing four points to win. She took her two points for starting her turn in Tokyo and her first roll, came up with three 1's. Her subsequent rolls produced no additional points. She burned through her energy wiping the deck of cards trying to find something for quick points but by the time Nuclear Power Plant came up, didn't have enough energy left to buy it. Mom proceeded to immediately eliminate her which meant there would be a new champion! Everyone mockingly cheered while my sister sat there, visibly upset at what had just transpired. My wife then immediately proceeded to eliminate mom. My wife had a good lead on me in points, so my only choice was to try to be last monster standing. I managed to get her down to two hearts but she had 17 points. She took two at the start of her turn for being in Tokyo to bring her to 19 but didn't score anything, or so it seemed. She played the Yin & Yang evolution card that she'd been sitting on all game which allows her to flip all the dice over to their other side. This turned three hearts she rolled into three 2's, giving her a points victory. I was happy for my wife that she won. She's never won a game we've played before. Before we started the next game, I made sure to snap a picture of a nearly victorious, but very dead, Cyber Bunny.

Game 2
Myself - The King
Wife - Alienoid
Mom - Gigazaur
Sister - Cyber Bunny

For some reason, my wife decided to switch from Pandakai to Alienoid. Why mess with success? Game 2 was much shorter of a game, and is a great example of what the expansion adds. The cards on the initial flip were all discards that didn't do any of us any immediate good. Again, the first few turns were just people building up points and energy. I rolled three hearts on my first roll which netted me the Twas Beauty Killed The Beast evolution which gives me one point at the end of every players turn while I'm in Tokyo. I proceeded immediately use it which was a mistake, as everyone started swinging for me and they were swinging hard. I burned it which caused me to lose all my points. Lesson learned for next time to play it closer to end game. My main focus was then to heal back up and in doing so, got a few additional evolution cards. One of which was Simian Scamper, which lets me yield Tokyo once without taking damage. I decided that once I got back up to full health, I'd take over Tokyo and instead of trying to roll claws, roll for points and to stay in Tokyo as long as possible and rack up points and use the evolution card at the last possible moment.

After getting up to full health, my time came and looked to take over Tokyo which was occupied by my nemesis, Cyber Bunny (sister). I got lucky and rolled 5 claws which caused her to flee. My sister became occupied trying to heal. My mom and wife were both under the assumption I was going to be aggressive and focused on obtaining energy and keeping damage enhancing cards away from me. I was content staying in Tokyo, quietly getting points and trying to roll for more. Eventually, when I got to 17 points, my sister caught onto me and encouraged everyone to swing for me. Mom played an evolution card that made everyone lose two points, but after one time around the table, were only able to get me down to 3 health. I got back up to 17 for starting in Tokyo, but was unable to get any points. My little sister got me down to 1 health, and my mom delivered the would be knock out shoot. I played the evolution card and yielded. On my turn, my first roll consisted of two hearts and one 3. I knew if the turn got to my sister, she'd try to knock me out. Trying to get a few more hearts seemed wise, and would hold onto the 3 just incase. Second roll, was nothing. Third and final roll, one heart and.... TWO 3s!

My little sister stormed out of the room, laughing and shaking her head in disbelief as my mom and wife just sat there laughing. I made sure to snap a celebratory picture to commemorate my first ever victory in King of Tokyo.

As I packed up the game. My sister demanded a rematch next week. I was thinking about introducing them to Takenoko next week, but feel obligated to defend my championship! We'll see how things go.

My pieces are all cut fine, but the scoreboards all have scuffling around the edges after just a few plays. It's like the printing is coming off. Some of the player pieces are delaminating but that is easy to fix.

Some cards are better than others for their cost, but some dice rolls are better than others too!

One thing we have found is that often no one will buy cards because the three on offer are poor, but they don't want to spend the 2 energy on sweeping them away. So we added an extra rules that if you do the sweep for 2 energy then you get a 2 energy discount if you buy one of the newly revealed cards immediately.

Playing with the "Power Up!" expansion, I had the Armor Plating. I was attacked by 2 separate cards (not dice), each dealing 1 damage. Should those have both been cancelled, or should the damage have been summed and I lose 2 health?

I argued that they were separate events, and that 0 damage should be taken. All except the attacker agreed. When we realized that I had the target token, and the attacker was the targeter, I wound up taking 2 damage, twice. If we had summed the card attacks, I'd have taken 3 hits - 2 for the cards + 1 for the target. If the targeting is 1 + 1, rather than 2, I'd take 0.

So which should it have been? 0, 3, or 4?

I think we understood the rules okay, but when people are re-rolling claws to get hearts, you aren't beating down the person in Tokyo. If no one starts a turn in Tokyo, then they can't dish out huge amounts on the rest of the players either. Plus, and I need to emphasise this, kids really slow down any game, especially when the dice are too big for them to roll all six in one go. Then there is the re-reading of each card (before they even roll the dice!) and so on. And is it just me who ALWAYS turns the dials the wrong way? Every time!

I assume you must have the expansions? If everyone is healing, then you have to sit in Tokyo, and make them continue to pay, while you collect victory points!

I've had KoT games as short at 20 minutes (with 6 players even), and some have lasted an hour and a half... which I agree, is probably past that game's welcome. Especially as there is usually one or two players who are eliminated early. There is nothing worse than sitting around waiting for the next game, while the rest of the group is having fun

That's a good idea. Even a 1 energy discount would help.
