What functional changes? One card one changed. Other than that there is no difference. Slightly clarifying some rules in a publicly available rulebook is not a change.
There are more changes than that in the 2nd edition; a lot of them are subtle tweaks, some of them are moderately significant (for example, Acid Attack and Plot Twist are both functionally different cards than in 1st Edition).
On top of that if I bought the new edition for the functional changes to the battery card, I wouldn't be able to use my promo cards or cards from my Halloween expansion because the have the old backs so the new card is worthless to me. I would rather just take the old version out of my deck.
So then why is this even an issue? You have a good game. You presumably like it. You are losing virtually nothing by not having the two new characters. You have a whole lot of stuff for that game. You have no need or want to replace it.
How is it remotely a problem that you don't have those two, mostly irrelevant characters? Such that it is worth this much ire?
But I'll tell you what. Since it is all the same to you, why not send me your Cyber Kitty and Space Penguin and their powers, and I can send you monster packs for Cthulhu and King Kong. I get what I want, you get new content, and if you ever decide you need the stuff you have me, you can just rebuy the base game and expansion since you are cool with that.
I could do that. But, well, I already have Cthulhu. And may or may not be interested in King Kong. And the game I have? It works just fine as it is. And my lack of, say, Kraken and Cyber Bunny does not vex me even remotely.
That being said, it seems likely that *someone* will take you up on that deal. So why not just broker that deal instead of waging this, like, 6 month war on Iello?
