My kids are 10 & 11, and we really enjoy the game (especially with Power UP expansion). We play with a "kid friendly" house rule - if your monster gets to zero health, he doesn't get eliminated, but gets "reset" to the beginning. Discard any cards (reshuffle your evolutions into your evolution deck), discard any energy tokens and set your monster to 10 health and 0 VP.
Having them eliminated from the game was a bit harsh for their age...this means they can still play and even make a comeback...or even seek revenge after the monster that "reset" them - and "reset" them in return.
It also provides enough of a penalty that sets them back and provide an ample lead by those still playing.

So, you just play for a VP win then, yes? That's kind of cool.
