If it meant "reduce damage taken by 1", wouldn't it say something like that?This game was designed by Richard Garfield, and if you've ever played M:tG in any sort of official capacity (like a "Friday Night Magic" tournament), you know that cards* are written exactly how they are meant to be interpreted.
*well, newer cards anyway; there are several hundred cards requiring errata.
