Thread: King of Tokyo:: Rules:: Entering an empty Tokyo at the start of the game

Hi all,

I was taught that when you start the game, Tokyo is empty. Then, the first person to "role" a claw goes into Tokyo immediately. That is, even on your first roll of the dice, if a claw pops up, the game owner puts that die aside and says the player is now in Tokyo.

This seemed a bit odd to me so I checked the rules. It says that the first person to "obtain" a claw goes into Tokyo. However, the verb "obtain" doesn't seem to be used anywhere else in the rule book.

After reading the rules, it seemed to me that it meant that if you end your rolling phase with 1 or more claws, you go into Tokyo (and don't get to attack anyone). The key difference is whether or not you have to "end up with" a claw, or simply have rolled one at any point.

I know how I'd rule if it was my game, but this simple yet important point is causing us confusion. If you interpret it his way, then the first player is pretty much always going to be entering Tokyo. My reading would indicate that you could try to not finish with any claws and therefore potentially avoid going in.

I should also point out that I have never had the opportunity to get a thorough reading of the rules. I could well be wrong, but at the time, the game owner wasn't entirely sure of his interpretation after I pointed out my logic.

Finally, I wonder about the "not attacking" part of being the first to enter Tokyo. I'm assuming no matter how many claws you role, none of them "attack" the other players...meaning they are all more or less wasted. Is that right? (This is assuming my interpretation is correct). Assuming the game owner's interpretation is correct... then are you supposed to set aside that die, and then if you roll more claws, do those count as attacks, or are they wasted?

Thanks for your time and responses!
