I'm confused about a couple of points:
1. Why did some players have motives not to eliminate you? Just trying to stay out of Tokyo?
2. You agree that the yahtzee-like mechanic removes much of the randomness, yet you blame the "lucky element" for the loss. On top of that, the player who decided to attack you got on his last dice roll the claw he needed - so which "single lucky element" annoys you so much? Your claw (which you didn't want) or his (which he did)? Or the two players managing to not eliminate you? Or the fact you had nothing to mitigate damage?

1. General aversion to player elimination. Also not knowing how close I was to winning (I could see the card on top of they deck, they couldn't). Also not wanting to be the target of the stronger player when he tried to re-take Tokyo on his turn.
2. Both of the 1/6-chance-of-terrible-outcome rolls annoyed me, but if I had to choose one it would be the last one. As I said above, I don't mind randomness as much when its effect is limited. I'll play a game with a lot of "50/50 chance of moving up or down one position in the rankings, or of being eliminated if you're in last place" random events. Having a "chance of being bumped from first to last AND being eliminated without being able to react" event is another league entirely.
If you are one point away from death you are NOT winning. There are two ways to win and with more than just a few players at least some are going to lose due to their health. You keep saying you were in first place but you are looking at this wrong.
