Perhaps my gaming groups differ from yours in this respect. We care about places other than first, and care very much about close finishes (where first and second place differ by a small number of points). Those of us that keep game journals keep track of not only placements, but also end game scores.
This is a problem with KoT as you have 2 victory conditions. Counting VPs isn't really adequate. There are games where you can rank people and games where you can't - in KoT you risk resources (life or points) to get resources (points or kill others). Because of this investment it's hard to judge who is second or third, I would say if you don't win you lose and that's that (in KoT).
Also people who care about their placements aren't really the proper audience for KoT for the reasons mentioned. That's also why you had a lousy experience - it's not a game made for rankings.
