Generally I find that a yahtzee-like mechanic removes much of the randomness of simple dice rolling. However, King of Tokyo suffers from other mechanical defects that leave far too much luck in the game.

I played KoT for the first and probably last time...

You lost credibility here. One game doesn't usually give enough total game time to make an opinion about a game. Very few board games are absolutely perfect and if you dismiss every one that you have a bad first experience with you may miss out on some great experiences.

King of Tokyo is a dice game, so its prone to completely random and unpredictable events. I have seen every player outside of Tokyo eliminated by the two players in Tokyo rolling 5 claws each back to back. I bashed my rating down because of it. Then I played it again a couple of times since and have had a blast, reversing my rating again.

If that had been my first game and I dismissed it on that rare event I would not have been giving the game a fair chance or let myself enough experience to see if that's all the game has to offer.

Also King of Tokyo not only involves taking you off the top if you are about to win but encourages player elimination- something I personally hate in games, but its part of KoT and works- your 'players with motives' were playing it wrong. :goo:
