If you peruse the KoT forums, you will find that many people experience the same issue, and I would agree that going for energy is usually a bad strategy.

I think I understand why the cards were designed to be on the expensive side. Unlike the other die faces, a lightning bolt is always a plus, and if you roll one on your first or second roll, it's an interesting decision of whether to keep it or not. If the cards were cheaper, lightning would be a good die roll, and it would be a trivial decision of whether to keep it or reroll it.

I really like your friend's idea that three bolts give you extra energy, though. That way a lightning bolt or two is still pretty weak, but if you take the risk to go for three bolts, it has a bigger payoff.
