If the second player hadn't tried to get too cute with his secret evolution, this wouldn't have been a problem.
It wasn't a matter of being cute. It was a matter of someone unexpectedly pulling out 8 points in a turn and needing to use it to stop that person from winning.
Our group sees these cards not as something that should be played right away, but as that "last gasp" to stop someone from winning. To throw a wrench in the works of someone's best laid plans. Our most fun games happen because of plays like this.
And as a matter of fact, even though the guy who argued about this lost, it turned out to be a super-fun game that allowed the underdog to come out with the win. Its not so much about winning or losing, but about having the most fun. These types of plays, at least for our group, leads to the most fun.
