Two points:
That doesn't sound "on a par" to me.
Everything is really cheap if you ignore the majority of the cost of the materials used to make it!
Maybe if you did all that it wouldn't look very nice or be on par with professional work. I'm sorry if that's the case. I guess if someone can't craft very well you're right, nothing they make will look very good.
So what did I miss? The $5 ink cartridge that would print this plus a 200-300 more pages? The free foam core that you can get stacks of for free? Or that I'm in the US and you may have to pay considerably more than I do for any of these material?
Yeah, ink over here doesn't cost $5. And I'm not aware of anywhere where you can get "stacks of" foam core for free.
And, as the OP is in the UK, iirc, that is kind of relevant to this discussion.
But, you missed numerous things - you put cost valuations on a couple of things and implied that everything else was stuff you had to hand already - that stuff must have been paid for by someone at some point.
You can get piles of free foam core after any election around here. It's from all the left over signage. While I didn't list prices for every single thing if you add up what I did list there is plenty of money to buy things like paper and mat board and card stock. None of these things are particularly expensive. While they may not be as easy to find for low prices in the UK the game isn't as cheap there either. £60 ($97) according to the OP vs $55 here to get everything so someone over there might be willing to spend a bit more on materials.
Of course both myself and the OP stated pretty clearly we had no plans to make copies of this particular game. So it really doesn't matter if he can source the same materials at the same prices or not. I even disagreed with the OP about whether the asking price is worth what you get, I think it is. Though since I'm a bit bargain hunter my plan is to eventually buy the base game when I find it for $15-20 rather than the full $25.
