Conclusion:
I'm not a huge fan of Godzilla, but I understand he has a huge following. A good Godzilla (or Godzilla type) game should not be hard to make. I reviewed Godzilla (the actual game) before and it was alright (I purged it). This is not an official Godzilla game, but it uses all the characters from the movies (or similar to them anyway).
This game is a simple throw some dice and use the results to do "things" type of games. This is a classic "beer and pretzel" type of game. It does not have a lot of strategy, deep thought, or even options. With that said, this game is fun. I like to roll dice, everyone likes to roll dice, heck even you like to roll dice.
This is a simple little filler type of game where you get monsters to fight over Tokyo. The rules are simple, the components are okay, and you never get to destroy the city, yet you should have fun playing this.
I am going to keep this game and it will survive the purge.
Components:
The dice in this game are really nice. They are custom dice and big and blocky. They are really fun to roll and look great. I wish there were a set for each player instead of passing them around, but I'm sure it kept the cost done and I guess there is no reason to have so many dice.
The monsters are cheap (maybe not cheap) cardboard cut outs that stand in. I think mini figures would have been better, but to be honest the characters don't do much other than sit by the board on in 1 of 2 circles on the board.
The little cardboard board is nice, if not totally not needed or useful. There is also a deck of special action cards that are of decent stock with funny little pictures on them.
Overall, the components do a good job for a nice little filler, but if this was an epic game the components would be very bad.
Rule Book:
The rule book is well organized with great examples included. The rule book is full color and teaches the game in a very useful manner. There are not many rules in the game and the game is easy to pick up very quickly. The only question I really had was how to get out of Tokyo, but the rules explained it well (I was just looking for something else that was not there).
Flow of the Game:
On a player's turn, they roll the black side of dice. Each side of the dice means something different (get energy cubes, gain health, or cause damage). The dice also have numbers 1, 2, and 3 on them. If you roll 3 of one number you get that many VP (roll 3 number 2 means you get 2 VP). After you roll once, you can re-roll any of the dice you want. This you can do once more also (so max of 2 re-roll). Then, you are stuck with what you roll.
You use energy cubes you collect to by cards (they give you bonuses or special powers). Some of these cards you keep and some are use once).
The goal is to get 20 VP without losing all of your health. If you lose all your health you die and are out of the game.
That in effect is the whole game. There other rules about being in the city or not, but this should explain the flow of the game. You roll the dice and can re-roll any of the dice up to two times and then you follow the results.
Should I buy this?:
Yes, if you do not mind a roll the dice and follow the results game. Your decision is in pressing your luck and deciding which dice to keep and which to re-roll. The theme is a winner. The game gets better the more you use the cards and the more people you can get to play with you. The game is a little take that with 2 people.
This survives the purge.
