Although I can fully appreciate where both of these guys are coming from, I'm not sure I agree with them (that's not to say that we shouldn't value the work of the people who design the games, produce the art for them etc).
As the end consumer, my only real concern is whether the price on the box is representative of it's contents. So, as much as I appreciate that a lot of work goes into making a polished product, to my mind all that really needs to be factored into the costing during the planning stages of the enterprise.
In the case of KOT I feel* that they cheaped out on the component front, so my initial impulse is that it's not worth the price-tag from the get go. Founded or not, that's just how I felt as a consumer picking up the box for the first time in my FLGS and, knowing nothing of the game itself (way back when). Now however, I know it's an enjoyable game, but shaking that first impression is a damn hard thing to do.
I do now, as I probably did at the time compare it to other products with similar contents (in this case Elder Sign), their production quality** (much higher), and their price (a fair bit lower). That's just my two cents worth though.
* Pure opinion.
** Some of my friends KOT Dice have already chipped, whilst his Elder Sign Dice remain pristine (whilst Elder Sign has been played a lot LOT more, which only enforces my "they cheaped out" mind-set).
