Almost always with 4+. I've noticed no balance problems with more players. The fact that there are only three cards up for purchase each turn, and you can only buy one each turn keeps things from getting unbalanced for the early players. The more significant factor is the order of the appearance of cards, which is part of the game.
Sorry, what I meant was, with a larger group, the standard game discourages energy collection more, making your variant more suitable. With 3-4 players, I believe the cards are more suitably priced, possibly making the double dose variant less suitable.
