Normally you get one point for entering Tokyo, and *two* for staying in for a full round. That said, your variant seems interesting.
Ah yes, you are correct indeed! (I'm pretty sure I knew that, but I haven't played Vanilla for awhile)
This variant ramps up pretty quickly which we have found to be quite fun for our house. When someone is on their fourth or fifth tour into Tokyo, they get hammered by _everyone_, the kids start screaming, "GET HIM!!!", as compared to the Vanilla game where my sons tended to spend their turns attempting to roll more energy to buy more powers no matter where they were.
But of course YMMV depending on playstyle of your group. I imagine in gaming groups where most victories are achieved by victory points, this variant is unnecessary.
What percent of victories do you think you have in your group from gaining 20 victory points vs. being the last monster standing? I would guess old style game we would only win by victory points 15% of the time? Ballpark guestimate--it just didn't happen that often. Now it is probably about 40-50% of the time? Now it may also be due to the fact we tend to play 3-4 member games...
So for our house it has widened a new pathway, plus, it is Called King of Tokyo, I didn't like winning while wading in Tokyo Bay! :-)
