Yes, you pretty much only want to play this 2-player if it's your only option. With only one monster attacking you between your turns, you can rack up lots of victory points before your health gets precariously low and you have to exit the city to heal. Maybe you could mess around with house rules, like letting the monster outside the city roll an extra die or two.

A great way to play two-player, though, is if you have the Power Up expansion. You can quickly familiarize yourself with all of the special monster decks by playing dual battles, working your way through all of the monsters. You probably won't get through the entire decks, so there could be a couple of sessions' play in there. As always, two-player is an excellent way to learn the mechanics of a game, even if the strategies it teaches you largely go out the window when you add more players.
