Thread: King of Tokyo:: General:: Is being in Tokyo worth it?

I've played 4 or 5 games now (ranging from 4 to 6 players), and every time being in Tokyo is seen as a negative instead of a positive. Every player says something to the effect of "get me out of here" and leaves at the first sign of taking damage. It just doesn't seem like 2 VP is enough of a payoff to be willing to run the gauntlet and take all of that damage (especially in the 6 player games, it doesn't seem likely that you'll even see another turn if you try to stay in). So, the games turn into very slowly widdling each other down with no one seeing a point to actually being 'King of Tokyo'

Is there something that I'm missing to the victory point strategy? It doesn't seem likely for someone to get 20 before being destroyed. It also seems that part of the fun of the game is supposed to be seeing someone in Tokyo deal massive damage to everyone else, but because no one sees a reason to stay in Tokyo until their next turn, no one is ever rolling dice while in the city. It's just kind of a slow attrition war of buying cards and slowly dealing small amounts of damage. People even tend to pick up damage dice and hope not to roll them so they're not forced to go in.

It seems like the point of the game should be to be the King and have everyone else striving to unseat you to earn VP while dealing massive damage. But, so far it hasn't been that at all. What am I missing?
