I had been invited to a scotch night at a friends place and along with bringing an entry fee of 1 solid bottle of scotch (my addition was an Aberlour 18yr for those scotch fans out there) I decided to also pack King of Tokyo just in case. After a couple of hours of scotch tastings (and the realization I may feel a bit rough the next day) I got the feeling people were starting to wear a bit, running out of things to chat about etc... So I turn to my buddy Adam and say "Fives a good number!" Confused he asked me good for what at which point I go to my bag a pull out King of Tokyo. The rest of the guys look around and generally agree to play, though notably not sure what they're getting involved with. After explaining the rules a bit were off and within a round they all start to get what's going on. And then the attacks happened. Within little time most are down to 4 health. Now you would think someone would try to strike... alas my rolls didn't work out.. sure I got lots of health but it seemed I could hit the broad side of business tower with any attacks. Meanwhile everyone else not wanting to be the first person out all avoided attacking hoping to heal.. Even the people in Tokyo didn't want to attack fearing the repercussions... So the game went on a bit long but everyone was getting a good laugh out of it... and a bit of Highland Park 18yr may have been spilled on Tokyo Bay.
We all seemed to be in a stalemate until one of the guys picked up the card Nova Breath... and then.. then he saw his moment and did a 4 claw attack that took out 2 players and crippled myself and the game host. a couple of turns later and we all fell victim to the Kraken with breath from outer space.
Everyone was glad to have learned and played the game and the guy who one asked me where he could buy it. Here's hoping I've started 4 more people down the road of hobby games
