Games Played in March 2013

by Bobby Warren

I played 25 games a total of 51 times and recorded playing seven expansions a total of 11 times. I played nine of the games and two of the expansions in February. Six of the games and one of the expansions were new to me.

We got in a normal DreadBall league day but I only played Warmachine and Hordes only once this month.

One of the new games is exceptional and I think there are some big awards in it's future.

Agricola
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 2/13
My Rating: 8

This time was with four players. For the second game in a row we ran short of veggie markers because there were so many planted on fields and stone hut/field tiles. Luckily, I was able to get more of both on eBay so this should not happen again.

Bluff

Last Month Played: 5/10
My Rating: 8

Another classic game which many of the whipper-snappers have never played. It's a shame that there isn't a quality version of this available in the U.S. market. The Ravensburger edition with the cups shaped to fit into hands is the best.

Carcassonne
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 7/12
My Rating: 10

Expansions Played:Traders & Builders and The Phantom.

The Phantom felt like it increased the advantage to the person with the luckier tile draws. I'll need to play it again soon and keep an eye out for that.

Citadels
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 1/13
My Rating: 8

Expansions Played:: The Dark City.

I had a miserable game. I didn't draw a single red card and the only two blue cards I saw during the game were stolen from me by the Magician the turn after I drew them.

DC Comics Deck-Building Game
Times Played:8
Last Month Played: 2/13
My Rating: 7

This has been played a lot by everyone this month. It's such a well-done take on the Ascension game engine which is quick to set-up and put away, unlike Legendary, which is a chore to set-up and put away.

DreadBall
Times Played:2
Last Month Played: 2/13
My Rating: 9

I played two league games. First, I beat Alex's Veer-myn by four points and we were both happy that neither of us had any casualties meaning we were both unscathed through three games. Next up was Ben's Orx and Goblins and he kept trying to whack my players, which kept getting knocked out of the game. However, his mysterious mercenary, Number 88, was unable to make a big score when he needed and I was able to edge him out by a point. However, one of my jacks did die near the end of the game. He was replaced by a well-armored guard.

I talked a little more about our league experiences to date in an earlier blog post.

Finstere Flure

Last Month Played: 11/12
My Rating: 7

Nico was the biggest chicken and won the game.

Flash Point: Fire Rescue
Times Played:2
Last Month Played: 12/12
My Rating: 9

Expansions Played:Urban Structures for both games.

I haven't played this since December and that is more than a little surprising. We tried out the second version of the new specialist, the Rescue Dog, in the first of the games and he was a lot of fun.

Hordes
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 2/13
My Rating: 8

Alex played pThagrosh against my small force of big beasts led by eHoarluk Doomshaper. Things did not go well for the Trollville nine that day as Mighty Mulg did strike out.

Kanzume Goddess
Times Played:2
Last Month Played: New to Me
My Rating: 5

As a two-player game this is uninspiring. I do like that it took the Nightfall color chaining mechanism and made it work in a game that plays differently. The biggest complaint both Mike and I had about this is that the game takes such a long time because there are so few ways to attack and add energy.

Expansions Played:Power Up! for all the plays.

Everyone has it and everyone seems to like it, so we play it all the time.

Lord of the Rings Dice Building Game
Times Played:3
Last Month Played: New to Me
My Rating: 5

Very disappointing.

First of all it is all but unplayable out of the box with the enclosed rulebook. Sure, WizKids is working on rewriting it and making it available online, but that is not of any use to the casual gamer who tries to pick this up and play it.

We generally don't play the competitive-cooperative games, so we played this as purely cooperative and it is way too easy to beat that way. Because we are only concerned with gaining just enough glory to be able to prevent some cards from being corrupted, there is no reason to buy a lot of dice, which means not many enemy dice appear, which means it is easier to beat.

Mystery Rummy 4: Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld
Times Played:2
Last Month Played: 2/13
My Rating: 8

Mike and I split our two games this month.

Police Precinct
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: New to Me
My Rating: 6

Not a bad cooperative game, but it doesn't evoke the theme that Pandemic or Flash Point do. It plays more like a game of Grand Theft Auto than even the worst cop shows or movies, except for maybe Robocop.

Powerboats
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 2/13
My Rating: 7

We played a one-race game and Kevin, who hadn't played before ended up finishing first.

Qin
Times Played:4
Last Month Played: New to Me
My Rating: 7

It seemed really light at first, but after a few more games I am beginning to see a little more to it. It is still not a deep game and could easily been produced with a smaller board and less-elaborate pieces for a lesser cost. I am not saying it is over-priced for the components, just that it could have been done for a $30 retail price with less parakeet appeal. :)

Ra: The Dice Game
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 1/13
My Rating: 7

Still a fun two-player game which Mike and I have been playing fairly regularly. Nico bought a copy recently, so maybe we'll see it played on a Saturday sometime in the near future?

Resistance, The
Times Played:2
Last Month Played: New to Me
My Rating: 7

I'm generally not a fan of the games that try to take the Werewolf mechanism and tweak it. They just end up complicating something which shouldn't be complicated. This actually simplified and streamlined it while making it more of a game and less an exercise in determining who is the best lie detector, while keeping it fun.

Saint Malo

My Rating: 8

Spiel des Jahres winner in waiting? I think it could be.

Smash Up
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 10/12
My Rating: 7

Quick and fun, though sometimes the deck combos suck.

Super Dungeon Explore
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 11/12
My Rating: 7

Expansions Played:Von Drakk Manor.

The Barbarian, Princess Ruby, & the Sister of Light went delving to stop the evil Baron Von Drakk. Failed, they did. Badly.

Ta Yü
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 11/10
My Rating: 8

Mike and I had a tight, tight game which he won by a score of 16 to 15.

Take it Easy
Times Played:2
Last Month Played: 5/10
My Rating: 7

I played a couple of games of this and it is always well-received as a filler anyone can play.

Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin
Times Played:2
Last Month Played: 2/13
My Rating: 8

Expansions Played:Caverns of Bane for both games.

A couple of games at the store with four of us. I won both games, which is freaking unbelievable.

Würfel Bohnanza
Times Played:1
Last Month Played: 2/13
My Rating: 8

Wow, it was only played once this month. We're slacking. :)
