I disagree - you can use Wings any time, even if you're not going to take damage anyway - it's usual to use it just before you take damage, but not required.
If your opponent tries to Heal Beam you before the damage, you can spend on Wings then (it's not clear whether he can choose not to use the heart to heal you once you've decided to spend the energy to prevent him getting it).
