I was lucky enough to be off yesterday and a few members of my meetup group were going to be showing up early so I took the opportunity to show up early myself. On to the games....
If you read my previous blog entry you know about this game; Sub Heroes. It is a quick, filler game that can be played with 2-5 players and seems to scale pretty nicely. There were only three of us at that start so we played this while we waited for more members. The other guys liked this game as well. If you are looking for heavy strategy, avoid this game, but if you are looking for a light, fun filler give this one a try. I came in last because I couldn't build a decent 5-point sub. I played this one again with two different players later in the evening and again lost by a long shot.
Next, we played a 3-player game of Genesis. This is a Reiner Knizia game that I had never heard of. This is an area control/tile laying game where each player represents a species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, man) vying for control of a prehistoric landscape. I am not a big fan of tile laying games, but this one I really liked. The game play is good, but it being a Knizia game, the end game scoring can be rather wonky. I won this one because one of my opponents didn't see a blocking opportunity and let me place my final mountain tile. Got lucky.
We played The Mines of Zavandor next. I have been wanting to play this game for awhile. I enjoyed the game but it is one of those that requires a few plays before you can figure out a coherent strategy. I was just muddling through and didn't get my engine going until late in the game finishing in a disappointing last place. I would like to play this one again since I feel like I know what I am doing now.
A 2-player game of Urbion came next. This is a game built for solo play but does have a two-player variant. We managed to win, but a rules error made the game too easy. My previous blog entry details the issue I had with the way the rules were written. Still a good game.
Ah, King of Tokyo. One of my favorites. I finally got to play with the expansion and I think it added a nice element to an already good game. I couldn't roll claws to save my life so I decided to go down the fame route. I got to 18 before finally falling to the Megasaur rampage.
I picked up Bacchus' Banquet and we gave it a go. This game definitely needs the right crowd to play. It is a light deduction game with hidden roles and objectives. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and the more players (up to 5) the better.
Finally, a game that I have never won nor seen anyone win: Flash Point: Fire Rescue. We played a three player game and we were not doing very well at the beginning. We managed to turn the tide though and were on the verge of victory. We had saved 4 victims and there were two at an exit door and one more was being carried out when a massive explosion occurred in the bathroom. Someone joked that Mexican food played a part, but no one laughed as the walls came crashing down and the house collapsed. We were one turn away from winning! This game maintains its undefeated record.
A great meetup with some extra gaming. I look forward to next week.
