I didn't mention this before, but if asked if I would buy the game for only two players then I would say no (I'd probably go for Martian Dice in this case). KoT game really shines with more players

That said, I do find the simplicity with two players kind of refreshing. While in Tokyo do I stay and risk not being able to heal in order to get those victory points? Outside of Tokyo do I attack with few claws and risk going to Tokyo or try to attack indirectly instead through cards to whittle away at your opponents hearts and hope for a big assault next turn?

On the third roll of the dice you have no choice, but what are you going to strive for with the first two rolls? Too often I see others keeping a lone three and throwing away claws and energy.

It's a pretty simple game to try out by using just a few dice and some markers for player pieces and energy. You could make up a few simple cards out of paper. This would give you an idea about the mechanics of the game. You'll have to keep in mind though that those big chunky monster pieces really do add a lot to the theme and overall enjoyment.

Thanks for the input. So it sounds like it can be enjoyed but most prefer it with 3+. I am curious if the power up expansion would make it more challenging with the new powers. Can anyone comment on how the expansion is?
Challenging is not a word I would use with KoT. You can have some strategy to your play (what to reroll, what cards to try for), but mostly it's just fun. It doesn't try to be much more. The expansion adds more chaos in that you never know what power you will get (and neither do your opponents). Some powers are immediately beneficial and some are only useful in a few circumstances. They do add a lot to the theme because your monster has its own set of unique cards. You can read through quite a few of them by browsing the images (King of Tokyo: Power Up!) to see what they are like.
