There is no specific instruction about whether the stats are secret or public. I play with them public and we announce them when asked.
It's up to you to decide at the beginning of the game which way you want to play.

Thank you for the clarification. As you said, I did not find it explained in the rules and being that the player cards do not have large numbers or stands for display, you could assume that the intent of the game was for that info to be private.
I guess then we are looking at a "house rule". You can play the game either way (public or private score tracking) and add or subtract some of the complexity.
For example, in Small World you "announce" the coins/victory points you are getting that round, but hide the amount once they are in your possession for the rest of the game. Other players can try and keep track mentally at where everyone is at and attack the leader accordingly, but that may not always be possible. You could play KoT the same way.
Public disclosure is not a problem, but I do find that it does slow down the game down a bit as you can have each player ask for players health & star count multiple times during the game. Or conversely you don't ask enough and someone sneaks in with a star win or slips by with 1 heath.
Maybe once per complete round everyone could announce where they at in their scoring.
