Thanks for this variant. We tried it this past weekend and liked the game much better. We did make a few changes from your list up top::star: Put out 5 cards in the middle instead of 3
:star: Wiping the cards requires 4 energy (instead of your proposed 3)
This all worked really well, and people had a much better time with the game (we already liked the game).

Next, I'm curious if there might be an easy set of rules to eliminate player elimination and/or make winning by VP's more likely. I've only had a game won by VP's once, and that was in a game reduced to a 2-player game where one player had wings and the other had some crazy defensie thing so they basically both couldn't kill each other.
I think the VP's you get should scale with players if you make it around the table at a minimum, so for example, you get 1 VP for starting in tokyo for each other player in the game (so in a 3-player game you'd get 2, a 6 player game you'd get 5). This better reflects the fact that staying alive in Tokyo in a 3 player game is totally different than staying alive in a 6-player game!
