What a weird and wacky thread this has been To throw another log or 2 onto the fire:-I like Yahtzee. I particularly like a variant where you play 3 scoring games at the same time and add up all 3 at the end.
-I own a travel version of Yamslam, which is literally Yahtzee with chips instead of a scoring pad.
-Given the right circumstances (family, waiting on lines at cons, etc.), I'm quite happy to play Yahtzee.
I played King of Tokyo and really, really did not like it. Anyone in this thread denying/minimizing the comparison to Yahtzee is fooling themselves, since so much of the gameplay is Yahtzee. Yes, there's cards. Yes, there's slightly more choices. But the base of it all is Yahtzee.
Player elimination in a game where a player can be eliminated based on something they didn't choose (be forced back into Tokyo when they didn't want to be there) is just flat-out frustrating. The cards are imbalanced and add to the frustration level of buying a card you think is good, then having one that costs the same or less pop up which is MUCH stronger, is very high. And, while once again, I do really like a good game of Yahtzee at the right time, it will generally last 10-20 mins, while this is 30-60 mins, while adding on only theme, but very, VERY little extra gameplay.
Do I blame people for liking it, or want to rant on about how awful it is? No, I certainly understand, I like games that some people think are awful. But this one is not for me.
