This is the only way I play the game now. It scales beautifully. Being in Tokyo is a higher risk with more players. This variant causes the high risk to also have a high reward. As the risk of being in Tokyo lowers (by player elimination), so does the reward.
In my opinion, this should have been a core rule of the game. It's a simple rule that elegantly integrates risk and reward.

Happy to hear it worked as well for your game group as it did for ours. I can't imagine playing the game any other way now and maybe with the upcoming expansion, we'll see a similar (and hopefully even better) rule tweak to the base game.
EDIT: I like your idea of 1VP per active "player" instead of "opponent". That would increase the max possible VP's in a round to 6 instead of 5, but it doesn't seem game breaking. I'll have to variant our variant with your tweak the next time I play. Thanks!
