We've played it with two monsters each. That seemed to keep the spirit of the game (a multi-player slugfest).We've also played it with a 3rd dummy player which we alternately controlled each turn. That made it a much more strategic game. It wasn't less fun, just different.
Honestly, the game is a light-hearted and quick romp, so experimenting with variations is part of the fun!
